Pirooz Kalantari was born in Tehran in 1953. He started his career as a journalist and film critic, then began making films. Mr. Kalantari was a founding member of the Iranian Society of Documentary Filmmakers, and has written extensively on the history of Iranian cinema and especially Iranian documentary cinema.
