Not just a classic father-son struggle,
Tell Them Who You Are features the great cinematographer Haskell
Wexler, still feisty and uncompromising at age 80, and his
photojournalist son, Mark. Born into a wealthy family in Chicago,
the elder Wexler began dissenting at an early age (even leading
a strike at his own father's factory). He was, in a sense,
against everything. Having established himself in Hollywood
by the mid-1960s, Wexler was making as many enemies as friends,
being hired and fired from films (most famously One Flew Over
the Cuckoo's Nest) and positioning himself in leftist politics.
His son Mark, predictably, is quieter and conservative, and
the making of this film is as conflicting as it is therapeutic
for the two men. With comments by Sidney Poitier, Jane Fonda,
Conrad Hall, Milos Forman, Billy Crystal, John Sayles and
more.
Mark
S. Wexler has worked as a photojournalist for more than twenty
years, covering assignments for such publications as "Time,"
"Life," "National Geographic" and "The
New York Times" and contributing to eight volumes of
the popular "A Day in the Life" book series. He
is also a documentary filmmaker whose credits - as director,
writer and producer - include Me & My Matchmaker (1996),
about the late Chicago matchmaker Irene Nathan.
