STARKISS: Country
of production: Netherlands In
India's famous Greaty Rayman Circus live fifty girls, from the age of
four to twenty-four, who have been sold by their parents to the circus.
They live locked up and isolated from the other artists. These others
include a hundback dwarf clown, a miniature man who fits perfectly in
a shopping bag, the water-spitter who swallows live goldfishes... These
girls are not allowed contact with anyone except their coaches. One
of their acts is the Starkiss: where girls hold a bit in their teeth
and fly through the air. This is a story about displacement, homesickness,
desire, love, fear, and hope. Chris Relleke and Jascha de Wilde established Wilderell Film Foundation in 1993. Relleke was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1961. He studied art and audio visual work, and has created installations and worked in the theatre in addition to making films. Jascha de Wilde was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1967. She studied art, culture, and education in the Netherlands and Portugal. Other Wilderell Film Foundation productions include LES OLIVETTES (1993), TRUC AND PLUMES (1996), and DABBA WALLAHS (1998).
