The situation in North Korea has the
potential to turn into an even more terrible humanitarian
crisis. In July 2003, businessman Jim Butterworth and nurse
Lisa Sleeth learned that an estimated 250,000 North Korean
refugees were living underground in China after having escaped
a food crisis and other persecutions that have claimed approximately
three million lives during the past ten years.Their shock
at both the plight of the North Koreans and the apparent apathy
of international governments, the U.N. High Commissioner for
Refugees and the media, galvanized them into making a documentary
although they had no previous film experience. By October
of 2003, they were posing as tourists in the Koreas and China
while stealthily documenting the harrowing stories of political
refugees and the heroic activists helping them escape their
living hell in North Korea through the “underground
railroad” via China to South Korea. Essential viewing
for anyone concerned with human rights.
