Director Marcela Arteaga uses the stranger-than-fiction life story of Luis Frank as a lens through which to provide a unique look at the history of the 20th century. Frank, a Lithuanian born at the end of the 19th century, emigrated to New York in the beginning of the 20th century, was an American spy in Paris during the First World War, a Republican miiltant in the Spanish Civil War, and then an exile in Mexico where he started a new life and founded a family. During his Spanish period, Luis Frank shot two documentaires and by the end of his life he planned to remake one of them; however, he died before finishing his work. Frank’s life made him a witness to many decisive moments in history, something that appealed to Arteaga. She took memory as the starting point and goal of her film essay. “More than reconstructing Luis’s life step by step,” she explains, “in this documentary I tried to recover the individuals, places, facts, feelings and atmospheres that marked him and his lifetime.”

Marcela Arteaga began her studies in 1987, specializing in film direction. Professionally she has collaborated on projects of filmmakers such as Carlos Carrera, María Novaro, José Luis García Agraz, Tomás Gutierrez Alea.
