Amputees sometimes experience pain in a limb after it has been removed. Acclaimed experimental filmmaker Rosenblatt uses the phenomenon of “phantom limb syndrome” as a metaphor to explore his feelings about the death of his younger brother forty years ago. When seven-year-old Eliot Mitchell Rosenblatt passed away after a long illness no one in the Rosenblatt family discussed it. Jay, two years his brother’s senior, struggled with sensations of guilt but was unable to express them. Now after four decades, he has translated his feelings into art. This short transposes his reflections on grief and loss into 12 chapters that refer to various stages of mourning such as “collapse, “denial” and “shock.” Blending family photos with associative archival footage, Phantom Limb merges the personal with the universal, and the emotional with the psychological.

Jay Rosenblatt has been making films for over 20 years. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim and a Rockefeller Fellowship. His films have won numerous awards and have screened throughout the world. A selection of his films had a one-week theatrical run at New York’s Film Forum and throughout the country.
