Inspired by the city symphony films of the early 20th century, the backstage paintings of Degas, and the Americana portrait photography of Avedon, Strand, Arbus and Mark, No Gray Twilight was photographed on black and white Super 8 stock by stuntman and former rodeo cowboy Richard Bucher with his wife Kathryn. The film observes several young cowboys getting ready for their rodeo rough stock events. It begins at dawn as the rodeo participants arrive at the venue, inspect the horses and the bulls, and prepare themselves and their gear. Relaxed at first, they interact with each other, and then as ride time draws near, they isolate themselves in intense preparation for their attempt at a qualifying ride. The film culminates in an explosive montage of bucking bulls and straining broncs with cowboys trying to stay mounted until the eight-second buzzer sounds.


Richard and Kathryn Bucher were boirn and raised in suburban Southern California but were influenced by the ranching life of their grandparents. As children, they spent every summer at their paternal grandparents' ranch in rural north eastern California. Throughout high school and college Richard competed in rodeo rough stock events, qualifying for the state and national finals every year, while Kathryn competed on hunters and jumpers at horse shows. They both attended California Institute of the Arts. Richard is now a successful stuntman, with film credits ranging from Zorro to Old School.
