Mr. Kyushiro Kusakabe, a former reporter who lost his mother and wife, travels from Tokyo to Nagasaki with his sister-in-law. By the time we reach the city, we have learned about pre-war Nagasaki, and come to know the man's history, as well as the histories of several others.
