EMPIRE AND RESISTANCE:
JOS DE PUTTER RETROSPECTIVE

presented by the festival and Block Cinema at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University

The First Chicago International Doc Film Festival and Block Cinema at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, present EMPIRE AND RESISTANCE: JOS DE PUTTER RETROSPECTIVE, on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30. The comprehensive retrospective takes place at 40 Art Circle Drive, Evanston, Illinois, USA.

Jos de Putter was born in the Netherlands in 1959. A freelance film critic as well as a documentary maker, Mr. de Putter is a past editor of the leading Dutch film magazine SKRIEN, and has published in many of the Netherlands' other leading film publications and newspapers. He has also worked for the television program DIOGENES.

This comprehensive retrospective reveals the work of one of today's finest documentarians, working in the direct cinema tradition, to audiences in the Chicago area.

Mr. de Putter has won awards including the Prize of the City of Utrecht for best debut film (IT'S BEEN A LOVELY DAY, 1993), the Joris Ivens prize at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (SOLO, THE FAVELA'S LAW, 1994), the Jury Prize at the Tehran Film Festival (NAGASAKI STORIES, 1996), the L.J. Jordaan Prize (THE MAKING OF A NEW EMPIRE, 1999), and the Dance Screen Festival Prize (ZIKR, 1999).

This retrospective takes place at the Block Cinema of Northwestern University, 40 Art Circle Drive, in Evanston. Mr. de Putter will attend the screenings.

The retrospective was organized by the festival in collaboration with Will Schmenner and Scott Curtis of the Block Cinema. We thank Mr. Jos de Putter, Ms. Claudia Landsberger and Mr. André Naus of Holland Film, and Mr. Frank van den Engel of Zeppers Film & TV BV, for their generous support and assistance.
