As AIDS destroys his population, South African President Thabo Mbeki has publicly doubted the link between the disease and the HIV virus. In 1998, after having lived with HIV for ten years, a man decides not to take anti-retroviral medications until they become available and affordable through the public health sector. This form of protest brings a ferocious toll on the protestor himself.

Brian Tilley is a native of Johannesburg. He has written and directed a number of films for South African and European television, including the fiction work THE LINE aka IN A TIME OF VIOLENCE (1994), and the documentaries FRUITS OF DEFIANCE (1989) and JOHANNESBURG STORIES (1996). He is a founding member of the VNS/Afravision video collective, set up in 1985 to document socio-political events in South Africa.
