Chicago director Lauri Feldman’s first feature-length documentary took nearly eight years to make. It records the story of people exonerated from death row in the United States, told, collectively, from their point of view. They take us into their lives as they are arrested, convicted and sentenced to death for crimes they did not commit. They share with us the ways they found to survive death row – emotionally, psychologically and spiritually – while under the threat of impending death. For each of these people, the truth of their innocence finally emerged, and they were freed, some after 16 or 18 years in prison. Returning to their lives on the outside, they reunite with family and friends, and attempt to find jobs. At the same time, they struggle with loss, anger and pain. Their personal stories are told within the framework of events surrounding former Illinois Governor George Ryan’s decision to commute the sentences of all death row convicts in the state to life in prison without parole.

The Innocent is Lauri Feldman's first independent documentary feature. Six years in the making, it was inspired by an educational short she wrote, directed and produced called Life After Death Row. Feldman, a Smith College graduate, lives in Chicago with her hsband Doug Fisher and their dog Eli. She has produced and directed a number of documentaries for VH1 including Behind the Music: Lilith Fair and Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music. She produced the pilot for the Court TV series The Wrong Man, and directed and produced the VH1 pilot Seven Days Left: Queen Latifah Goes to the Oscars.
