Kahraman (whose name means “hero”)
tries to make a living as a pimp in the perdition of Istanbul’s
Russian quarter. His two Moldavian girls mostly do whatever
they want and never give him the respect he desires. Kahraman
decides to make an expedition to Russia to recruit “genuine
beautiful Natashas” who will raise his revenues during
the coming New Year festivities. The film also follows Savas
(literally “war” in Turkish), a social climbing
real estate agent after quick money. With his wedding day
fast approaching, Savas tries to convince himself that he
is ready to settle down, (as he says, “for the comfort
of a home to go to in the evening and ironed shirts in the
morning”), but he knows that it will be difficult for
him to mask the “dark side” of his personality
for long. Contrary to Kahraman who appears to be a complete
loser, Savas displays the careless confidence of a winner;
but, as if to prove it, he constantly lies to everybody, and
most especially, to himself.
Cem
Madra was born in 1969 in Ankara, Turkey. Before this project
he was studying sociology in France. Heroes—Between
Day and Night, is his first cinematographic experience.
