Albert Maysles, the first recipient of the Chicago International
Documentary Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award, is celebrating
50 years in filmmaking this year, and is honored here for
having forged new directions in documentary through his passion,
pursuit of truth, innovative techniques and independent style.
Albert and his late brother David (1932 - 1987) are recognized
as pioneers of "direct cinema", a riveting, non-interventional
approach to documentary filmmaking. They were among the first
to capture the drama of human life as it unfolded before their
camera: without scripts, sets, or narration.
As part of this master class, Albert Maysles will show two
six-minute trailers from non-fiction features-in-progress.
Hand-held and from the Heart is a self-portrait in his own
words and images and includes conversations between himself
and people who have been most important to his personal and
professional life. The Gates, part of his on-going collaboration
with the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, documents the
installation of 7,500 gateways covered in flying saffron fabric
in New York's Central Park for 16 days this past February.
