FLASHBACK Country of
production: Latvia Most films you see, including at this festival, have a sense of hurry and urgency. Not so FLASHBACK. This is a film of exceeding calm and reflection, a gentle autobiography incorporating images from filmmaker Herz Frank's life and many celebrated short films. FLASHBACK especially focuses on the short film 10 MINUTES OLDER, from 1978, in which Frank and a cameraman study the glowing, haunting, shimmeringly emotional face of a young boy at a puppet theatre. Some twenty years later, Frank relocates the boy, who is now a man, and whose life regularly requires hiding his emotions. At the same time, death suddenly looms over Frank: a terminal disease for his wife, heart surgery for Frank himself. With this film, Frank offers a deeply indulgent, yet deeply stirring and beautifully composed, portrait of himself and his world. Director:
