“I have come to know Stephen Bright
as one of the more powerful voices for truth, justice and
accuracy in our system of criminal justice.” –
Former Illinois Governor George Ryan
This
crusading film considers the controversial institution of
capital punishment in America through the eyes of Stephen
Bright, the nation’s leading anti-death penalty lawyer.
For twenty years Bright has defended death row inmates deep
in the heart of America’s “death-belt” (the
Southeastern states) where 90% of all executions occur. Bright
has built one of the most renowned public interest law firms
in the nation, the Southern Center for Human Rights. The Center
attracts young lawyers from the most elite law schools in
the country to work for little money, under extreme conditions,
for poor clients facing the harshest punishment. The filmmakers
follow Bright and his colleagues during a tense period when
they activate all resources in an attempt to spare two clients
scheduled for execution. This riveting film offers a unique
and shocking exposé of the flaws of our criminal justice
system.
