Beijing is currently the biggest, busiest building site on the planet, its growth spurred by the 2008 Olympics and China’s entry into the World Trade Organization. Eighty to 120 million construction workers toil there, most for a mere pittance, at the mercy of contractors with terrible safety records. As shiny new buildings and icons of western consumerism take the foreground, the hardships of the people constructing these new images, as well as the disappearing world of the country’s culture-carrying elders and their values, are shunted into the shadows. Concrete Revolution provides a brave vision of the dark side of the capital’s transformation to glossy modern city. Its blend of objective documentation and personal reflection adds up to pungent social commentary. Unfolding in an innovative visual style, this intelligent exposé of the social cost of massive modernization premiered to kudos at the Venice Film Festival.

Xiaolu Guo received her Master Degree in 2000 at the Beijing Film Academy, and in 2002 attended the National Film and TV School.
