CLEARANCE

Country of production: Austria
Year: 1998
Language: English
Mins: 20

Directors: Andres Horvath

CLEARANCE is a grim parody of violent computer games like DOOM or WOLFENSTEIN. The video screen turns into a computer screen, and, just like in one of those games, the viewer experiences the action from the subjective point of view (albeit without the thrill of interaction. The player becomes a voyeur, forced to passively watch what millions are acting out on a daily basis.

From the statement of the jury, awarding CLEARANCE the first prize at an Austrian Festival:

"...PERFECT EDITING, SUPERB RHYTHM . . . POLITICALLY INCORRECT, AND SEXIST ... AT THE END - A SYMBOLIC FORTISSIMO-MIX OF VERDI, WAGNER, DARK FOREST AND BLOOD-RED SPRING WATER."

Andreas Horvath (born in 1968, in Salzburg, Austria) is a photographer and filmmaker. He makes short experimental films and documentaries. In 1993, he published a black and white photo book on the American Midwest, the so-called "Heartland." His book on Yacutia, Siberia was published in 2003.
