Was the U.S. presidential election of
2000 legal, fair and true? How did the “average”
American perceive the events surrounding the process and the
outcome? And what did the powers-that be do to confirm the
results and thereby maintain our democracy? This insightful
documentary fearlessly delves into the questions and controversy
surrounding the election while providing a historical overview
of voting history in the U.S. The merits and disadvantages
of the Electoral College versus the popular vote are examined,
as well as the advantages and perils of electronic versus
traditional voting methods. Combining man-on-the-street interviews
along with the viewpoints of Illinois Congressman Jesse Jackson,
Jr., Judge Richard Posner, Greg Palast, Alan Dershowitz, Vincent
Bugliosi and former Indiana Senator Birch Bayh, director Matt
Kohn reveals a still unsettled situation regarding voting
in present day America. This documentary empowers the viewer
with knowledge, but it also challenges us by asking, “Is
this the best we can do?”
Matt
Kohn graduated from Brandies University with a degree in Politics,
Feminism and Film Theory. At Brandeis, he was the Student
Government President. "Lake Success", published
by Soft Skull Press in 1996 is Kohn's highly regarded book
of poetry. He has produced, edited and directed short and
full-length films, music videos, industrials and documentaries
for the past fifteen years.
