September 11, 1973. Antonio Coloma is a Communist Party city councilman in southern Chile. But with the U.S.-sponsored coup against democratically elected President Salvador Allende, Coloma's world is turned upside down. Soon, he is harassed, and then detained, barely escaping the murder that many of his comrades met. However, he is released from prison, and manages to escape to Germany.

Thirty years later, Mr. Coloma travels back to Chile. He has been back before, though each voyage is special. He confronts the deep wounds marking those who stayed behind, and addresses the anguished issue of whether he should have stayed and fought. He travels throughout the country, discovering what remains of the world and the people he knew.

This time, Mr. Coloma also tries to locate someone who was crucial in his escape: a former "comrade" who was actually a spy for the rightists. He could have stopped Mr. Coloma's escape. But he didn't. Why?
