Asher Tlalim understood his home better
once he left it. When the filmmaker's wife was accepted into a Ph.D.
program in London, they and their children left Israel for London. There,
their exile ("galoot") introduces them to a whole new range
of perspectives on their troubled homeland. Tlalim turns his camera
on his family and a diverse set of new friends, including candid Palestinian
exiles - one of whom lives in an apartment at #67 - and Israelis ashamed
of their government's actions. Visiting once beloved family homelands
in Poland, Morocco, and the Occupied Territories, GALOOT weaves a wide-ranging
tapestry of tales of identity and displacement. A painfully honest and
brave film, GALOOT was difficult to make: the Israeli Film Board withdrew
from the film after viewing a rough cut. While GALOOT has no easy answers,
it is a memorable testament to the ability of travel to broaden the
mind.
Asher de Bentolila Tlalim was
born in Tangiers, Morocco in 1950. He later moved to Israel. He is of
the generation of Israeli filmmakers and artists profoundly shaped by
the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
