EDMUND'S ISLAND is a lovely and sympathetic portrait of an "angel"
working as an Encinitas, California, newspaper salesman. Edmund is a
homeless veteran. But you might never guess that when watching him dart
in and out of traffic, selling and giving away over one hundred papers
every morning, based on a traffic island in the middle of Encinitas
Boulevard. In the minutes between traffic lights, Edmund creates a caring
community of face-to-face relationships within the anonymous world of
rush hour traffic. He is a vendor and a businessman, yes, but he is
also a catalyst for a caring community. He establishes friendships,
tells the news of the day, and exchanges pleasantries, while his customers
/ friends give him gifts of food, money, books, and clothing. Edmund
reciprocates by fostering joy and compassion as the community ebbs and
flows past his island.
Mark Freeman is Assistant Professor
of Television, Film, and New Media at San Diego State University. He
has worked on scores of programs for broadcast on PBS. His works have
won awards from the National Educational Film and Video Festival, the
Chicago International Film Festival, and many others.
