Baba never knew her father, but suddenly she unravels the mystery of his identity. She seeks his blessing on her pending marriage. Yet the elation of discovery quickly gives way to terror: her father insists she marry not the man she loves but an older man her father chooses, and that she undergo the horror of female genital mutilation. She is forced to flee her father's village, seeking asylum and refuge in the United States. However, rather than being accepted into
safety, she becomes enmeshed in the U.S. immigration system. The filmmakers
meet her there, as Baba courageously continues to navigate through the
traps the world has set for her. Sandy McLeod
is a twenty-five year veteran filmmaker. She has directed music videos
for such artists as the Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen, and Roy Orbison;
acted in movies directed by Jonathan Demme; and worked as a script supervisor
on films directed by John Sayles. |
