A work of powerful cinematic poetry, ALLOTMENT is an affectionate portrait of a seemingly insignificant phenomenon: the urban garden. Gardeners and poets take to the stage in this powerful and beautiful film, filmed across the seasons, exploring forgotten plots of land along railway lines, motorways, and industrial estates.

ALLOTMENT is the third in a series of short, twenty-some minute studies of geographic spaces from Dutch director Ben van Lieshout and cameraman Stef Tijdink, following the award-winning THE ZONE (about an area where prostitutes meet clients) and NIGHT AT THE MALL (which is about exactly that, and which showed at this festival in 2003). These films reveal van Lieshout as one of today's great masters of the short film. They also bear something in common with the somewhat more conventional yet nonetheless fascinating movie TRIP TO PARADISE, also directed by van Lieshout and shot by Tijdink, which shows in our festival this year as well.

Ben van Lieshout is a director, screenwriter, and producer. He has won awards at the film festivals of Berlin, Troia, Bergamo, and beyond. The majority of his work is distributed by the Netherlands Film Museum. Mr. van Lieshout is a lecturer at the Utrecht School of the Arts.
