The West Lusaka Man

Dutch entrepreneur Roel Goosen has been sentenced to death in Zambia for the August 30th 2001 murder of a West Lusaka woman. Roel swears he remembers nothing of that night save for heading down to a local bar with the hopes of catching a ride to meet his Zambian fiancée. The next thing he knew, he was being attacked by an angry mob accusing him of shooting a local woman and then waking up in jail. Despite the lack of any hard evidence to link Roel to the shooting, the testimony of two eye-witnesses, who claim to have seen a white man with a rifle near the woman’s house on the night in question, was enough to convict him. Now a diplomatic resolution and extradition back home are his only chances for survival. This eerie and harrowing doc follows Roel’s parents as they desperately try to prove their son’s innocence and take him home to Holland. But interviews with Roel’s faithful fiancée and the witnesses from the trial reveal a haunting portrait of the case. Roel, who cannot be filmed in jail but is given a chance to speak through pictures and letters, did own a rifle and had army training, but was he capable of killing another human being?

Born in 1966, he studied film at the Art Academy in Breda, the Netherlands. Since 1993 he has made several documentary films, including one about funk musician Sly Stone (LET ME HAVE IT ALL) and one about black pop stars (CAN’T U HEAR ME SINGIN’) Since 1997 he has also worked as a free lance director for the TV station VPRO.
