October's Cry
This
moving documentary follows the quest of two determined women
– a grieving mother and a civil rights lawyer –
as they seek justice in the killing of 13 Arab men during
the Al-Aqas Intifada of October 2000. On the day in question,
violent demonstrations erupted as the Arab citizens of Israel
– the county’s largest non-Jewish minority –
rioted in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle in the
Occupied Territories. Israel police responded with force and
in addition to the 13 Arab men killed, one Jew was also killed
and hundreds of people were wounded. This strong film follows
the reluctantly started three-year-long inquiry by the Israeli
Government into the shootings of the Arab men through to the
troubling results that sparked new anger and a demand for
justice. Though the backdrop of this film is a stormy one,
it sets the scene for a universal story of courage and dignity.
