IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON
Between
1968 and 1972, the world watched in awe each time an American
spacecraft voyaged to the moon and as 12 American men walked
on the lunar surface. The intimate epic In the Shadow of the
Moon vividly communicates the daring and the danger, the pride
and the passion, of this extraordinary era in American history.
This compelling documentary combines archival material from
the original NASA film footage, much of it never before seen,
with candid interviews with the surviving astronauts, including
Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13), Dave Scott (Apollo 9 and 15),
John Young (Apollo 10 and 16), Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 and
17), Mike Collins (Apollo 11), Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Alan
Bean (Apollo 12), Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14), Charlie Duke
(Apollo 16) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17). It also features
astonishing space shots re-mastered from the original film
rolls to reveal the Apollo program with a stunning visual
clarity. The mute 16mm rolls shot in Mission Control have
been painstakingly lip-synced with the 16-track audio recordings
of the mission controllers' voice loop to re-unite the pictures
and sound of many historic moments for the first time, lending
a striking immediacy to many dramatic scenes.
David
Sington is a self-thought filmmaker, first studying
at Cambridge University, UK (major in physics) and then working
as a radio producer for the BBC World Service. In 1987, he
joined the Science and Feature Department of BBC Television,
where over the next 12 years he produced and directed 22 documentary
films on a wide range of subjects. In 1999, Sington left BBC
to form his own documentary production company, DOX Productions.
Since then DOX made 17 films which have been shown on BBC
4 in the UK and PBS in the US, as well as by 30 other broadcasters
in 22 countries. He has received a Gold Hugo, two WildScreen
awards, and the 2007 Earthwatch Film Award. His Project Poltergeist
won a prestigious Grierson Award in 2004.
