A Story Of People In War And Peace

For ten years after the Karabakh War journalist cum soldier Verdan Hovhanisyan couldn’t look at the footage he had filmed in the trenches – footage of fellow soldiers being wounded, getting killed and desperately recording final messages to their families. But at the urging of his young son, Hovhanisyan realized that he had a responsibility to future generations of Armenians and set out to find the surviving “characters” from his war film to see how they had faired in the peace that followed the ethic Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan. In searching for the men and women he once shared a trench with, Hovhanisyan uncovered a powerful truth about the impact of war and how, despite peaceful resolutions, it impacts and changes lives forever. Incorporating footage shot in 1994, he constructs not a moving collage of the lives affected by war, but sheds light on a conflict that should not be forgotten.

Vardan Hovhannisyan is the founder and president of Bars Media with over 10 years of experience as a director, producer and cameraman for CBS news, ARD in Europe, and numerous other media outlets. Vardan was a front line journalist and cameraman during the Karabakh war and was taken hostage twice during the conflict. He is a member of the International Documentary Association and the International Federation of Environmental Journalists.
